Borrowing
Overview
The Borrowing department provides loans of non-UVa materials from libraries worldwide for University of Virginia faculty, students and staff. Materials that you may borrow from other universities worldwide are articles, books, dissertations, government documents, technical reports, patents and newspapers on microform. In some cases videos and sound recordings are also available. Our response time is usually 3 - 10 working days.
Request Process
Interlibrary Services is proud to offer online web requesting services. Please visit our logon page to set up an account.
After setting up your account, you will be able to request and track the process of all your ILL materials.
To request an article or book, visit UVa libraries VIRGO catalog to search your material.
After viewing the details of your selection, select 'Requests' on the VIRGO menu bar at the top of the screen. Select 'UVa Users'. After logging into your account, your information will automatically populate our book request form. Select 'Submit Request' and you are done.
Renewals
Materials borrowed from another institution may be renewed depending on the lending library's policy. The slip that you receive with your material will indicate if renewal is allowed by that institution. Please initiate your renewal request through the Interlibrary Services Borrowing Office by visiting your Web Request Account and selecting 'Checked Out Items (Renew)' on the left side menu. You will be notified of the new due date if the renewal is approved via email. If the renewal is refused, a request to return the material will be emailed to you. Please make your request at least 72 hours before the book is due.
The lending library has the prerogative to recall an item at any time. If this occurs, an email will be sent to you.
Fees
Interlibrary Services does not charge for Interlibrary loans. However, users are expected to pay any interlibrary loan charges over $40.00 that are imposed by another library. You will be notified before the transaction if this might be the case.
Delivery of Material
Articles will be delivered to everyone via email in PDF format.
Books will be delivered to the departments for Faculty. Graduate students, undergraduates, and staff may designate a pick up library for delivery.
