African-American Poetry, 1760-1900
African-American Poetry, 1760-1900 provides a survey of African-American poetry from the earliest published African American poems to the works of Paul Laurence Dunbar. This collection is licensed from Chadwyck-Healey/Pro-Quest and is restricted to use by the VIVA Community.
American Poetry to 1900
American Poetry to 1900 includes 1,288 works by 209 poets, along with six landmark anthologies of American poetry. The database gathers the works of the most influential American poets, from the Colonial period to the early twentieth century. This collection is licensed from Chadwyck-Healey/Pro-Quest and is restricted to use by the VIVA Community.
Early American Fiction (1789-1875)
The University of Virginia Library received a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to digitize several hundred volumes of first printings of early American fiction dating from 1789-1875. This collection is mostly restricted to use by the UVA Community; a subset is openly available.
English Poetry, 600-1900
English Poetry 600-1900 contains poems in English from Anglo-Saxon times to the end of the nineteenth century by writers from the British Isles. The collection contains over 165,000 poems which have been drawn from about 4,500 separate printed sources. This collection is licensed from Chadwyck-Healey/Pro-Quest and is restricted to use by the VIVA Community.
English Verse Drama
English Verse Drama contains more than 2,200 works by around 500 named and over 300 works by unknown authors. This includes masques and short dramatic pieces, selected translations, works written for children, and numerous adaptations. It covers the late thirteenth century through the end of the nineteenth century. This collection is licensed from Chadwyck-Healey/Pro-Quest and is restricted to use by the VIVA Community.
Lewis & Clark Collection
Full-text and page images of two editions of the Journals of Lewis and Clark (edited by Biddle & Allen in 1814, and by Thwaites in 1905); the published journal (1810) of Patrick Gass, a member of the Corps of Discovery; and the catalog of George Catlin's "Indian Gallery" (1837), painted on his travels with William Clark from 1830-1834.
Westward Exploration
Early volumes related to westward exploration before and after the Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's Corps of Discovery. Many of the volumes are extensively illustrated, and all are housed in UVa Library's Special Collections.
