Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) was one of the first American women to achieve distinction as a photographer. UVA has over 900 photographs taken by Johnston of Virginia architecture from 1929-1935. Her photographs are breathtaking examples of the American built environment that has been largely erased from today's architectural landscape.
Jackson Davis Collection of African-American Educational Photographs
Jackson Davis, an educational reformer and amateur photographer, took over 5,000 photographs of African American schools, teachers and students throughout the Southeastern United States. His photographs, housed at UVA's Small Special Collections Library, provide a unique view of southern education during the first half of the twentieth century.
Smithsonian American Art Museum Catlin Indian Paintings Collection
Over 400 portraits of Native Americans and cultural documentation landscapes by American artist George Catlin (1796-1872) from his travels with William Clark and on his own through the western frontier in the early 1830s. Of particular note is the authoritative identification of the tribal affiliations.
